Summer FYI Edition #6

Hello Parents,

School starts in less than a month. That is surely cause for celebration!

We have some updates for you now, and we should be able to send more information in about a week. There is a lot of information here, but I hope you have time to read it. Most of it is new information and probably very relevant to you.

Indicate Your Plan

It would help us greatly if each family would let us know their intent for the 1st semester, even if you’re coming to Thrasher:

  • Option 1 – attend Thrasher in the building
  • Option 2 – attend Thrasher completely online
  • Option 3 – attend Hamilton County Schools (but not Thrasher) online

To do this:

  • Login to PowerSchool on an internet browser (not the app) at https://powerschool.hcde.org/public
  • Click on “Forms”
  • Click on the 2020-2021 Family Learning Options and follow the prompts.
  • If you get stuck, please just reply to me and tell me your option!

Registration Q&A

We were at Thrasher last year, but I haven’t registered yet.

That’s OK. Online Registration for returning students will be open again on August 3rd. We’ll put out a new email then to remind you.

I am new to Thrasher, how do I register?

Welcome! Registration online is easy. Click here: https://www.hcde.org/parents___students/online_registration

Is Thrasher having an on-campus registration?

Yes, but it will be different than ever before. If you need to present proofs of residency or other documents, you can come to Thrasher on Aug. 7. However, we will not have the traditional meet-your-teacher event due to social distancing requirements.

How will I know who is my child’s teacher?

We’ll be trying something new this year. Each teacher will send a postcard to their students the first week of August!

How do I sign up for PTA and to volunteer?

Soon, we’ll send you an email called, “What Can I Do Now?” This will have a sequential online-based checklist of everything you can do to make the beginning of school smooth and easy.

May I send you my proofs of residency online?

We’ve come up with a super-easy way for you to submit all documents from home.

Scan or take a photo with phone:

  • Proof of Residency #1
  • Proof of Residency #2
  • Birth Certificates
  • TN Immunization forms

Then, click here to submit documents: https://forms.gle/4mjQRm2DxRqGSRgn7

2 Proofs of Residence can be any of the following documents at the physical address in Guardian’s name:

  • Mortgage, Lease or Deed
  • Electric, water, gas, or cable dated within the last 30 days
  • Agency or Court Documentation with address dated within the last 30 days (IRS, SS Disability)
  • Insurance (medical, life, auto, home) statement dated within the last 30 days
  • Current Bank Statement or Employment Check Stub with address dated within the last 30 days

First Days Back – THIS IS NEW

A/B Groups

All students will be assigned one of two groups – a Group A and a Group B. In the event of Phase 2, only one group will come at a time to school. In the event of Phase 2, Group A will come on Mondays and Tuesdays while Group B will come Thursdays and Fridays. Any days a child is not in school, online learning will be the main mode.

  • Group A will be students with last names beginning with A-L.
  • Group B will be students with last names beginning with M-Z.

If siblings have different last names, use the last name of the oldest sibling.

SMMHS will be using the same division, which will help families who have children in both schools in the event of Phase 2 implementation.

Please note that it will be very difficult for us to switch a family from one group to the other, and I can’t guarantee that we can successfully make changes while maintaining the reduced numbers we will be required to have. However, if you need to be in a different group and you have no other way around it, please respond to this email and let me know your family’s needs. Please include your phone number so that I may call you.

First Three Days of School – Grades 1-5 – IMPORTANT/NEW – Plan Ahead

  • August 12 – Group A only
  • August 13 – Group B only
  • August 14 – Groups A/B operate virtually at home (and do not come to school). Students selecting the “at home” option will be invited to school this day to meet their teachers and make sure they can login to the digital platforms, etc.
  • August 17 – This week, grades 1-5 will resume school in the currently designated Phase.

What about Kindergarten Phase-In?

Kindergarten Phase-In will begin Monday, August 17. More info about this will come to new Kindergarten families.

Will Thrasher have Orientation Nights?

Orientation Nights will be totally online this year so that:

  • Families can become acclimated with the online learning platforms that will be used in the event of Phases 1 or 2. Even on-campus instruction will be making use of these platforms.
  • Families who can’t attend Orientation Night for various reasons can still access all the information.
  • Such large groups in one cafeteria just doesn’t meet safety requirements these days.
  • All families can access the information when convenient to them.
  • HCDE hardly ever remembers to turn our A/C during August evenings. (We don’t have control over our own HVAC – can you believe that?!)

Digital Platforms

  • All children will have a Class Link account. This will give children one username and one password, which will give them access to the entire digital suite provided by Hamilton County Schools.
  • Once logged into Class Link:
    • Kindergarten – 2nd Grade will use Class Dojo – a simple, streamlined, intuitive software that should make it easy for students to retrieve and return assignments.
    • 3rd – 5th Grade will use Canvas. This is a powerful program similar to Managebac at SMMHS. Students will be well-prepared for the middle school years in more ways than one.
  • This does not mean that children will have a full day of screen time – whether they are at school or at home.
  • Yes – We will still provide paper packets for families taking the @ Home option and can’t print at home.

Sanitizing Updates

ABM (HCS’s out-sourced custodial service) will have an updated schedule for sanitizing high-contact areas at least twice per day. HCS is possibly hiring a secondary sanitizing crew that will visit schools 3x per week.

Numbers Updates

  • 74 – the number of Kindergartners registered so far. This is a pretty healthy number for mid-July. We should be able to expect around 85 Kindergartners this year. (This is good news.)
  • 31 – the number of children taking the “@ Home” option so far.
  • 11 – the number of children going to home-school, private school, or virtual school so far.
  • 15 – the number of children coming to us from private school or moving in from out-of-zone schools (moving to 37377) so far.
  • 100 – the % of funds MEF is committed to giving Thrasher for personnel (Art, Computer/STEM, Extra Reading Support, Cafeteria) despite missing out on Dash ‘n’ Bash. THANK YOU, MEF and PARENTS!
  • 46 – the number of COVID-19 cases in 37377 today.
  • 3 – the Phase we’d be in if we opened today. (All “option 1” kids all day everyday – Social Distancing in place; masks a reality for at least parts of the day; cafeteria closed) – [Phase 2 is looking like a very real possibility if trends continue.]
  • 1,464 – the number of COVID-19 cases in Hamilton County today.
  • 1,840 – the number of COVID-19 cases in Hamilton County that will trigger a Phase 2 implementation.
